Recent Buy – MSFT

Hello!  I’ve been adding to one of my existing Portfolio positions to start November.  Thus, it’s time to bring you up to speed on the buys.

This is my 3rd foray into this stock in 2022 as its price has continued to decline.  From a P/E perspective, this is as inexpensive as the stock has been all year.

I’d like to invest plenty more over time and get this position into the top half of my Portfolio in terms of value.  That’s a ways off, so I’ll plan to slowly build out the position.

Here are the details for my buys…

Microsoft (MSFT)

After starting the year at a price north of $336, MSFT dropped has below $230.  This puts this year’s percentage decline over 31%.

I bought a share of MSFT back in September at $240.  While I didn’t find the stock undervalued at that time, I was willing to add a share to continue building my small position.

Now the stock is even less expensive, so continuing to add shares is my plan.  As you know I’ve been looking to improve my Portfolio’s Information Technology weighting for quite some time, so adding MSFT helps.

On 11/1/22, I bought 1 share of MSFT at $229.00.  The stock was yielding 1.19% at that price, well below my Portfolio average of 2.84% at the time.

Over the next couple of days, MSFT sagged some more (about 4.9%), so I scooped up another share.

On 11/3/22, I bought another 1 share of MSFT at $217.82.  The stock was yielding 1.25% in that case.

With this addition of 2 shares, my MSFT position has grown by 15.13%.  My share count has climbed to 15.222 shares.

These purchases raised my MSFT cost basis to $170.05/share, which was an increase of ~$8/share.

My Portfolio’s annual forward dividend income also increased by $5.44 as a result of the adding the pair of shares.  It’s not much thanks to MSFT’s low yield, but it all counts.

After my purchases, in terms of my Portfolio value, MSFT stands as my 46th largest holding in my Portfolio.  The stock is sandwiched in between a couple of REITs in National Retail Properties (NNN) and VICI Properties (VICI).

With MSFT being an existing holding, the number of stocks in my Portfolio remained at 58.

Summary

I purchased two shares of MSFT during the first week of November.  Each share was purchased separately, with the 2nd coming due to a further price decline on the part of MSFT.

My MSFT position increased by over 15% as a result of adding the two shares.  My MSFT cost basis rose as well.

The purchase resulted in a net investment of $446.82 into my Portfolio.  My forward dividend income increased by $5.44.

Happily, my Portfolio’s Information Technology weighting increased a bit.  However, there’s plenty more Tech to buy in order to bring this sector into my preferred weighting range.

I’ll continue to look for opportunities to add further MSFT shares.

Have you added any MSFT to your portfolio recently?  At what price would you be interested in doing so?  Please share in the comments!

  1. Below $220/share was an amazing buy price and commend you on taking advantage of the price drop. They are so insulated from rate increases with their large cash position and strong cash flow.

    1. I was definitely happy to add below $220, SDG. MSFT has moved a lot this year. I’ll continue looking for another opportunity to add at similar levels… or better ones.

  2. Been adding on the way down with MSFT as well. Thanks to $0 commissions and fractional share purchases MSFT is one of the few companies that if there’s left over cash I just throw it towards it. Completely missed that MSFT dipped down below $220 since I was tapped out a bit on cash in my brokerage account. That’s a very solid level for the long term in my opinion.

    1. Thanks, JC. I’m feeling tapped out on cash, too. Wish I could have added more at the time, but I do what I can.
I like your strategy of adding the fractional shares!
